In the first editions of this series, I tried to lay a foundation for this topic. I did explain that the three foundational technologies that are needed for website design and development are HTML, CSS and JavaScript. In the second edition we handled the role of HTML.
In this lesson we will consider the role of CSS. As already mentioned, CSS which stands for Cascading Style Sheets is a language used for styling the layout and appearance of a website. It can be used to greatly enhance the quality of the look and feel of a website.
Here is what Wikipedia says about CSS:
“Cascading Style Sheets is a style sheet language used for describing the presentation of a document written in a markup language such as HTML. CSS is a cornerstone technology of the World Wide Web, alongside HTML and JavaScript.”
HTML has its own default styling. To modify these styles and used a preferred style for presenting the web page elements, you can use CSS.
As mentioned in the earlier lessons, the purpose of this series is to shed light on the purpose or role of CSS; not to delve into a study of CSS. To learn these things thoroughly you need to undertake a professional training course. Those free YouTube videos are not sufficient to really make you a professional.
In the last lesson, we created a web page using HTML. In this lesson, we have used CSS to add a few styles, just to give you a feel of how CSS works. In the snapshot shown below, the first image is the web page (with HTML only). The second image is the same webpage (styled by adding CSS codes). This is followed by the CSS codes.
- The background now has an inner section at the top with an orange-like color and parent background beneath, which is dark gray.
- The inner section has curved edges at the upper left and lower right corners.
- The heading has a different color, and also has line at the top and bottom
- The hyperlink (i.e. linked text),” Pacetec Solutions”, is not underlined anymore.
Can you observe that in the CSS styled web page:
This is a simple example of what can be accomplished with CSS. Of course we can do a lot more than these with CSS, but this is adequate to sensitize you to the purpose of CSS. Again this may seem complex to a nonprofessional; but that’s because you have not undergone a formal professional training yet.
In our next lesson we will add some JS to this simple web page to show you an example of what you can accomplish with JavaScript. These HTML and CSS codes may look strange to you. Don’t bother about that. After going through a web development course you will find it very easy.
In our web development course we will teach you how to write these codes line by line. In no time you will become a Pro. It is an intensive, instructor-led online coaching course.
